AS I SIT HERE IN THE ATLANTA AIRPORT
pondering the state of our profession and the
Appraisal Institute, I’m wondering if you, our members, really know what the organization is doing for
you in these turbulent times.
I had many members e-mail me in response to
my January President’s Message, where I stated
that there were many opportunities for us in 2010.
There seemed to be some confusion as to whether
I understood the gravity of the market dynamics
going on out there. Many felt I should be crying
out, “The sky is falling!”
They expressed concern that the appraisal
profession is being attacked from all directions:
regulators, other professionals and even clients.
In the lending arena, we face government
regulation, while
accounting and
other financial
professions are
vying for our space
CRISIS
MANAGEMENT
Let’s not let a good crisis go to waste!
without falling under the regulations we do.
Furthermore, real estate brokers are vying for the
“limited valuation services” portion of the skill
set we offer.
In many instances, the lending community —
as evidenced by its lobbying for legislation to
limit appraisal regulatory requirements — does
not respect the value of competency and public
accountability we offer as a matter of collateral
valuation. The unintended consequences of the
Home Valuation Code of Conduct have created
havoc in the lending community and for all parties
involved in appraisal transactions.
It has quite simply become a crisis.
Well, rest assured that your board of directors is well aware of what is going on. We are
appraisers, too, and are navigating our personal
businesses through the same rough waters. But
my personal tack is to look for opportunities in
every situation to reach an end goal, and the
time is now.
